Celina Caesar-Chavannes + the Political Panel with Jenni and Scott

For the first part of the show today, we welcome Celina Caesar-Chavannes. Ms. Caesar-Chavannes is the former MP for the riding of Whitby, serving as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister for just over a year, and then Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development. In March 2019 she announced that she would not seek re-election in the next election, and 18 days later she was sitting as an Independent in the House of Commons.

We’re gonna talk about all of that, plus Ms. Caesar-Chavannes’ work in equity and inclusion ... and the aggressions and micro-aggressions she experienced as a Black woman working on Parliament Hill.

On Part 2 ... it’s our #PoliticalPanel with Jenni Byrne and Scott Reid. We’ll pick up on where we left last to discuss the continued erosion of the Donald J. Trump presidency. Will he see the race out through till November? Plus:

  • The Conservative “Leadership/Memberships Sold” Race, and what all of that means.

  • Hockey and Sports and outbreaks of COVID at training camps ... are the playoff tournaments even real? Will the Stanley Cup be real? And why are journalists getting
locked up for over a month just to cover it?

Pablo Rodríguez + the Political Panel with Jenni and Scott

For the first part of the show today, we welcome Minister Pablo Rodríguez to the pod. Currently, Minister Rodríguez serves as Canada's Leader of the Government in the House of Commons. And the only other politician who can hope to compete with the Prime Minister on “Quality of COVID hair".

We’re going to talk a little about his back story.
His history as a politician ... what animates him.
We’ll discuss the politics of Quebec.
The politics of Ottawa.
Government accountability in the time of COVID.
What the heck is a financial snapshot and why are we not getting a real budget?
What’s the key to managing a minority parliament?
And Canada’s unsuccessful bid for a U.N. Security Council seat.

On Part 2 ... it’s our #PoliticalPanel with Jenni Byrne and Scott Reid. We’ll pick up on all of those topics AND ... we’ll throw in some bonus material: Peter MacKay ... so impressive in the conservative leadership debates last week. How did he learn to suddenly NOT SUCK quite so hard? What if Trump gave a Death Rally in Oklahoma, and only his 3rd cousins, twice removed showed up? And which disaffected Republican is gonna piss off Trump more ... John Bolton or Rick Wilson of The Lincoln Project?

Her own research addresses social and tax policy, poverty in Canada, and public administration. We’re going to talk about – what else – the COVID economy, and what it’s going to look like for us, from here on out.

Part 2 of the pod, it’s the occasionally bickering, ever-lovin’ Political Panel with Jenni Byrne and Scott Reid. We’ll pick up on our conversation with Jennifer. PLUS ... We’ll get more granular about the COVID reopening and its implications. We’ll talk about the upcoming Conservative leadership debates and what kind of MUST SEE TV that’s gonna be. The role of policy in leadership races ... hint: there isn’t one. AND ... Trump’s firing up the ol’ Rally machine on June 20th. And everyone is welcome to attend! As long as you sign the liability waiver, so he can’t be held accountable in the event you get sick and die. Fun!

Neera Tanden, president of Center for American Progress

Neera Tanden is president of the very influential Center for American Progress and she’s joining us remotely from Washington, D.C.

Neera has had a long and influential career in Democratic campaign politics and public policy. She’s worked on campaigns for Michael Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Obama/Biden, and was a senior adviser to Hillary Clinton throughout the 2016 Democratic Primary and General Election.

Former Premier Kathleen Wynne: her story, her politics, and her legacy.

She was the first woman premier of Ontario. She was the first openly gay head of state for a government in North America. She was my boss. She was a great leader and she is an even better person.

Before her premiership ended in June of 2018 with a historic defeat, her government made education a priority, implemented universal pharmacare coverage for children, took action to fight climate change through a multi-jurisdictional cap-and-trade market, raised wages for the lowest paid workers, and ultimately led the country to expand retirement security for all Canadians.

It was the pleasure of my life to work with her. Please join us to hear her story, her politics, and her legacy.

Keith Boag and Neil Macdonald

I'm thrilled to welcome Keith Boag and Neil Macdonald to the podcast after recent retirements from the CBC.

Both Neil and Keith spent years working in the United States. They stand witness to the demise of journalism and of American democracy, and today, we’re going to talk about both.

Keith Boag was with the CBC for more than 30 years, including as Chief Political Correspondent. His career included work for many years in Washington, D.C., and as Ottawa Bureau Chief. Keith covered seven federal elections in Canada, ten party leadership campaigns, as well as several US elections.

Neil Macdonald spent 43 years reporting on politics, wars, elections, revolutions, booms, crashes, and coups. In 2015, Neil moved back to Canada after 17 years in the United States, 12 of which he spent in Washington, D.C. as the Washington bureau correspondent for The National.

Needless to say, they've covered it all, and I'm thrilled they took the time to sit down with us for a no filter conversation about the state of US politics and the decline of journalism.

*This conversation was originally recorded on February 5, 2020, just after the Iowa caucus and before the New Hampshire primary*

A big thank you to Canada2020 for graciously hosting us at their HQ for the recording.

Conservative Party of Canada leadership contestants: on your marks, get set, go! Except for Rona Ambrose. And except for Jean Charest. And except for Pierre Poliviere. And maybe John Baird? At least for now we have a two person race with frontrunner Peter Mackay and Erin O'Toole.

To talk about that, the Ontario Liberal leadership race, the Iowa Caucus, and how federal governments respond to a public health issue, we have in studio our political panel with Jenni Byrne and Scott Reid!
